Mural Update

Over the past few weeks, I've been working on my mural for Ryton Primary School. This was a commissioned project from the school and after many alterations, my design has been chosen for the shipping container. I'm excited to work on this project as I've never done anything on this scale so as much as it will be a challenge, it's a good experience and one that will benefit my portfolio. Since submitting my first design I've had two sets of alterations, the first of which can be seen below.

First Mural

At first, the feedback was a bit overwhelming as it seemed like they wanted a forest scene and my design was far from that! My original animals, the tortoise and crocodile, would have to change to fit with their requests so it was back to the drawing board! I started with moving the horizon line down and thinking of a solution to turn my landscape into a forest without changing the composition too drastically. By moving the horizon line down, I had to move the rocks, bringing them further into the foreground. This left me slightly less room to play with but it meant I could add trees to frame the landscape.

The next mission was to incorporate either the Ryton Wheel or a rainbow. As much as rainbows have become a bit of an icon in the UK, I didn't want my piece to feel too generic as it would become a focal point and detract from other areas I'd prefer to be in focus. I decided the Ryton mining wheel could be included in the vegetation in the background, almost like something to find in the composition. When making this piece I wanted it to appeal to children, parents and anyone who would pass by the school grounds so I wanted to keep the colours quite muted, helping it blend in with the environment and appeal to a larger audience. Taking all of this into consideration, I began refining the composition, using colours from the original artwork and adding a few more for the trees and other details.

Second Mural with alterations

This was the second mural I submitted. I really like how this turned out and feel I learnt a lot in the process. The composition is more detailed but still has the simplistic colouring style I liked in the first one.  A few weeks ago I submitted this and it was chosen out of the three so I got some more feedback to work through.

The Final Mural

With this feedback, I changed the trees and animals to more realistic colours as they wanted, adding a darker brown to the colour scheme. I struggled to add more colour as I knew this would make the spray painting process more complicated but I think the final design works well and will be perfect for the school. I'm waiting for them to give this the green light but hopefully, there won't be any amends and I can start working on it soon!

SWOT Analysis

Strengths-

  • Able to take the school's feedback into consideration and work to tight timeframes to get altered artwork back to them.
  • Altering my style to fit the brief, playing with more colours than I would usually.
  • Developing my skills in working digitally on final pieces rather than sketches which is how I usually draw digitally.

Weaknesses-

  • Time taken away from my other uni projects means I'm slightly behind in my time plan, need to start my commercial project to stay on top of everything.
  • Could be too detailed for the container, imagery could be hard to read from further away.

Opportunities-

  • A great addition to my portfolio and learning a new skill, creating a mural for a school where so many people will see it passing by. Could present new opportunities.
  • Good experience to talk about, build better connections with people while painting it.

Threats-

  • Eats into the time I need to be working on other projects.
  • I don't know how to spray paint so learning a new skill will take time.
